Peter Kwong’s Birthday Cake

You may remember Peter Kwong from such roles as Rain (a.k.a. Lampshade Hat Man) in Big Trouble in Little China, or Tommy Tong in The Golden Child, or any of the dozens of TV roles he’s taken on in his career. As it turns out, he is a Sacramento native and a great friend of one of my coworkers. I had the good fortune to be asked to make his 60th birthday cake!

The party was a Hollywood theme so I decorated the cake with a ‘film strip’. I took a strip of plastic placed on a sheetpan, poured melted ganache over it, froze it, then peeled the plastic up and placed it on the cake. I’ve never done this before, I just used some creative brainstorming to come up with the idea. It worked great! The pictures were printed and laminated, then attached to the film strip with buttercream. I piped miscellaneous film equipment in chocolate and chilled it, then decorated it with buttercream.

Kathy said he loved the cake and that he had the best birthday ever! It was VERY exciting to create a cake for a man who was in three of my favorite movies from the 80’s (he was also in Gleaming the Cube)!

Soft Pink Occasion Cake

My fellow cake decorator Dennis made these two cakes today, both chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling and pink buttercream icing with ganache poured on top. I helped out by stacking the cakes and decorating them with the cupcake, writing and rosebuds. I love the way spray roses dress up a simple cake! Regular size roses are awkwardly large on most cakes, but spray roses are delicate, elegant and feminine.

Our incredible, mouth watering meal. This Fremont, CA restaurant serves what was easily the best Indian food I have ever tasted, and it’s all vegetarian! It was packed to the gills with Indian people when we arrived, which I knew was an excellent sign. Delectable food, creative, well balanced, and hot!

S’mores Pops

Saw this on Pinterest and thought I oughta give ‘em a try! Marshmallow on a stick, dipped in chocolate and rolled in graham cracker crumbs. Mmm.

Chocolate cake with strawberry mousse filling and swiss meringue buttercream. The cap is made from a cupcake with a piped and hardened square of chocolate on top. The scroll is made of marzipan.
