Navy Retirement Cake
Chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling and swiss meringue buttercream icing. Loved piping the anchor and rope! My bald eagle is a tad chubby faced, but what are you gonna do?+2 notesNavyDessertcake decoratingcakeRetirementCelebrationchocolate
Peach Almond Crumble Pie
I had just pulled these bad boys out of the oven when I took this picture. They’re still bubbling! The filling is made with peaches and brown sugar, with a little almond extract. The crumble topping is a simple brown sugar streusel with sliced almonds. This pie is my contribution to my store’s featured Summertime Pie. I have to admit, it smelled so good I wanted to eat the whole thing by myself.+1 notePiePeachesPeach pieAlmondsstreuseldessert4th of JulyPicnic food
Happy Birthday Cake
I saw something similar at the Whole Foods in Seattle (Roosevelt Square). Came home and thought I’d give it a whirl! I love the candles already placed on the cake when you buy it.+1 noteBirthday cakebuttercreamcake decorating
Father’s Day Cakes
Super Dad and Dapper Dad! Is there anything more enjoyable than piping ganache mustaches?… No.+1 noteCakeChocolateFather's dayMustacheDapperSupermanCake decoratingRetro
Chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream. I really enjoyed putting those tiny toothpick ski poles in the buttercream hands of the little skiiers! Skiiers or skiers? People who are skiing. Down a buttercream bunny slope. The tent was a real pain in the ass. Altogether, great fun was had. I’m just hoping no one tried to eat the toothpicks!+3 notesCakeChocolateBirthday cakeSkiSkiingCampingDessertButtercreamCake decorating
Graduation Rosette Cake
I made this one for my friend’s sister’s college graduation. It’s a chocolate cake with whipped cream and chocolate mousse filling with strawberries and mini chocolate chips. Frosted in vanilla buttercream to look like it’s covered in roses. I also made cupcakes to go with it that spelled GRAD 2013. Maria came up with the idea for the cake and I had a lot of fun bringing it to life! I drove it from Davis to Sacramento in some extremely hot weather but luckily it didn’t melt into a cake puddle in my car!+9 notescakechocolateRosesMousseButtercreamGraduationCake decoratingdessertPastry

Peter Kwong’s Birthday Cake
You may remember Peter Kwong from such roles as Rain (a.k.a. Lampshade Hat Man) in Big Trouble in Little China, or Tommy Tong in The Golden Child, or any of the dozens of TV roles he’s taken on in his career. As it turns out, he is a Sacramento native and a great friend of one of my coworkers. I had the good fortune to be asked to make his 60th birthday cake!
The party was a Hollywood theme so I decorated the cake with a ‘film strip’. I took a strip of plastic placed on a sheetpan, poured melted ganache over it, froze it, then peeled the plastic up and placed it on the cake. I’ve never done this before, I just used some creative brainstorming to come up with the idea. It worked great! The pictures were printed and laminated, then attached to the film strip with buttercream. I piped miscellaneous film equipment in chocolate and chilled it, then decorated it with buttercream.
Kathy said he loved the cake and that he had the best birthday ever! It was VERY exciting to create a cake for a man who was in three of my favorite movies from the 80’s (he was also in Gleaming the Cube)!+1 notepeterkwongbirthdaycakechocolatehollywoodbigtroubleinlittlechina
Soft Pink Occasion Cake
My fellow cake decorator Dennis made these two cakes today, both chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling and pink buttercream icing with ganache poured on top. I helped out by stacking the cakes and decorating them with the cupcake, writing and rosebuds. I love the way spray roses dress up a simple cake! Regular size roses are awkwardly large on most cakes, but spray roses are delicate, elegant and feminine.
